The boiler was built for solid fuel and had no efficiency rating as the efficiency rating methods weren't begun until 30 years later. They were about 50 percent efficient with solid fuel as the fly ash had to pass through the passages without clogging the boiler in a season.

Adding the oil burner changed this a bit and the efficiency ccould have been raised to the 70 percent area by careful corbeling, insulation and chamber sizing.

However, the method for sizing the replacement boiler is to count the radiator sizes in square feet of EDR and make sure the boiler is 150% of that btuh output.
