I have a Erie City Boiler build in 10/5/1940 size 305 HP 160# Type 6 Use to be coal boiler converted over to #6 oil.
Question ????
I have to do refractory repairs on the boiler side walls and front wall above the burner.

The inside refractory is no problem but the out side wall of boiler is constructed out of 9" thick of comon brick (there is no steel casing on boiler now)
The areas of repairs on the outside is approx. 11 feet wide by 8 feet high is it possible to remove the 9" comon brick and install a steel casing and fill the area with refractory ? Do we need the comon brick for support of the steam and mud drum ? or are they self supporting ?
please get back to me ASAP. I need to make a decision . Thank you very much !!!
